Pyrrole Screening — Sunshine Coast

Could Pyrrole Disorder Be Behind Your Symptoms?

If you’ve been struggling with anxiety, depression, mood swings, gut issues or hormone imbalances — and haven’t been able to find a clear cause — Pyrrole Disorder could be a significant piece of your health puzzle. At True Vitality on the Sunshine Coast, Sue Kira uses Pyrrole Screening as a key investigative tool to uncover this frequently overlooked condition.

Furthermore, because Pyrrole Disorder affects so many body systems at once, identifying and addressing it can produce profound and far-reaching improvements in how you feel — often when nothing else has helped.

What Is Pyrrole Disorder?

Pyrrole Disorder — also known as Pyroluria or the Mauve Factor — occurs when the body produces excessive levels of a substance called HPL (hydroxyhemopyrrolin-2-one). HPL is a neurotoxic byproduct of haemoglobin metabolism, and when Sue finds it elevated, it signals a significant drain on two of the body’s most essential nutrients: zinc and vitamin B6.

Because zinc and B6 play critical roles in hundreds of biochemical processes — including neurotransmitter production, hormone regulation, immune function and gut health — their depletion creates a wide-ranging ripple effect throughout the body.

Additionally, research and clinical experience both point to Pyrrole Disorder as a strong marker of oxidative stress, which Sue frequently finds associated with conditions including leaky gut syndrome, heavy metal toxicity and chronic allergies.

What Causes Elevated Pyrrole Levels?

Sue commonly identifies elevated pyrrole levels in clients who have a history of one or more of the following triggers:

  • Leaky gut syndrome
  • Heavy metal toxicity
  • Chronic stress
  • Allergies and food sensitivities
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Significant infections or illness

Symptoms and Conditions Associated With Pyrrole Disorder

Pyrrole Disorder is notably common in people with mental health challenges, however it also affects many people who simply feel chronically unwell without a clear explanation. Sue looks for Pyrrole Disorder when clients present with:

Mental Health and Neurological Symptoms

  • Anxiety and panic attacks
  • Depression and low mood
  • Irritability and mood swings
  • Poor stress tolerance
  • Brain fog and poor concentration
  • ADD/ADHD
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Schizophrenia

Physical Symptoms

  • Hormone imbalances
  • Gut health issues and digestive problems
  • Migraines and headaches
  • Morning nausea
  • Allergies and food sensitivities
  • Poor immune function
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Thyroid dysfunction

“Pyrrole Disorder is one of the most underdiagnosed conditions I see in clinic. When identified and we address the underlying nutritional deficiencies, the transformation in how people feel can be remarkable.”Sue Kira, Naturopath & Founder, True Vitality

How Sue Tests for Pyrrole Disorder

The Test Itself

Sue uses a simple urine test to measure HPL levels in the body. Consequently, the test is straightforward, non-invasive and easy to organise. Unfortunately the urine test is no longer available and has to be determined in different ways. (The lab closed down)

What Happens if Your Pyrrole Levels Are Determined to be Elevated?

If Sue identifies elevated HPL levels, she develops a targeted treatment plan focused on:

  • Replenishing zinc and vitamin B6 — the nutrients most depleted by high HPL
  • Addressing underlying triggers such as gut health, heavy metal load or chronic stress
  • Supporting the nervous system with specific nutritional and herbal medicine
  • Monitoring progress with follow-up testing to track improvement over time

Because Pyrrole Disorder is highly individual, Sue tailors every treatment plan specifically to your results, your symptoms and your broader health history.
