Urinalysis — In-Clinic Urine Testing, Sunshine Coast

A Remarkably Simple Test That Can Reveal So Much

It might surprise you just how much information a small sample of urine can provide about your overall health. Urinalysis is one of the first assessments Sue conducts at True Vitality — and time and again, it uncovers important clues that might otherwise go unnoticed for years.

Quick, non-invasive and incredibly informative, urine testing is a powerful frontline screening tool that helps Sue build a complete picture of your health from the very first visit.

How Urinalysis Works at True Vitality

On your first visit to the True Vitality clinic, you’ll be asked to bring a urine sample from home. Here’s all you need to do:

  • Collect a first-morning, mid-stream urine sample
  • Use a clean specimen jar or any small glass container rinsed thoroughly with boiling water
  • Bring it along to your appointment

That’s it. From that single small sample, Sue screens for a wide range of health indicators right here in the clinic using the Combur 9 test strip by Roche — one of the most trusted urinalysis tools available. Results are ready almost immediately, and Sue will walk you through exactly what they mean for your health.

What Urinalysis Can Detect

Urine testing can reveal a surprising range of health information, including early warning signs that may not yet be causing obvious symptoms. Here’s what Sue looks for and what each marker can indicate:

Infection and Immune Markers

Leukocytes (White Blood Cells) White blood cells should not normally appear in urine. When Sue finds them, they typically signal a kidney problem or an infection in the bladder or urinary tract — something that benefits from prompt attention.

Nitrates Nitrates also don’t belong in healthy urine. Their presence indicates bacterial activity. When Sue finds both nitrates and leukocytes elevated together, a urinary tract infection (UTI) is often the cause.

Metabolic and Hormonal Markers

pH (Acid/Alkaline Balance) Your urinary pH reflects the overall acid-alkaline balance of your body fluids. Diet, medications, supplements and underlying health conditions all influence this reading. Sue looks for a urine pH of around 6.8 — close to neutral. Imbalances here offer useful clues about your dietary patterns and metabolic health.

Glucose Glucose doesn’t belong in healthy urine. When Sue detects it — a condition called glycosuria — it can signal early-stage diabetes, gestational diabetes or other hormonal imbalances, often before a person experiences any obvious symptoms.

Ketones The body produces ketones when it burns fat for fuel — during fasting, prolonged vomiting or diarrhoea, or when diabetes is poorly controlled. Elevated ketones are an important marker that Sue will always investigate further.

Kidney and Liver Markers

Protein Protein molecules are normally too large to pass through the kidney’s filtration barrier. When Sue detects protein in the urine — called proteinuria — it can point to kidney stress, high blood pressure, diabetes or, in pregnancy, pre-eclampsia. Catching this early is enormously valuable.

Urobilinogen Elevated urobilinogen can point to increased red blood cell breakdown, liver congestion or bile drainage issues — including gallstones.

Bilirubin The liver processes bilirubin produced by red blood cells. Finding bilirubin in the urine suggests the liver may not be functioning optimally, and prompts Sue to look more closely at liver health.

Erythrocytes (Red Blood Cells) Blood in the urine — known as haematuria — is never normal. It can signal kidney disease, urinary tract infections, inflammation, kidney stones or, in some cases, more serious conditions of the urinary tract. Sue always recommends prompt investigation when she finds this.

A Case Study: Early Detection That Changed Everything

A Ten-Year Mystery Solved in One Visit

One of the most striking examples of the power of urinalysis involved a Japanese client in her early fifties who came to True Vitality primarily complaining of fatigue.

Her urine test revealed markers suggesting early-stage diabetes and infection — low to medium levels of protein, glucose, nitrates, leukocytes and an acidic pH. Sue asked whether doctors had picked this up before, and the client confirmed they had — but over more than ten years, nothing had moved beyond monitoring, as nothing else seemed significant enough to act on.

The Family History That Changed Everything

The real picture emerged when Sue asked about family health history. The client’s brother in Japan had developed severe, uncontrolled diabetes with devastating consequences — near blindness, kidney failure and amputation. His diet, rich in white rice and sweetened sushi, had never been addressed.

Seeing the strong family pattern, and with blood and eye assessments also providing supporting information, Sue worked with the client to make targeted dietary and nutritional changes — including removing rice from her diet, a significant step for someone who had eaten it as a staple her entire life.

The Result

Within just a few months, the markers that had been present for over a decade had completely cleared. Her energy returned, her blood looked healthier, and she felt genuinely well — which was all she had come in hoping for.

“If I hadn’t organised the in-clinic urine test and hadn’t asked about family history, I may have missed the real root cause of her fatigue entirely.”Sue Kira, Naturopath & Founder, True Vitality

Why Include Urinalysis as Part of Your Consultation?

Most urine samples come back completely clear — and that’s a wonderful thing to confirm. However, when something does show up, urinalysis gives Sue the opportunity to act early, investigate further and address issues before they become serious.

Furthermore, combined with Sue’s other in-clinic assessments — Live Blood Screening, Iridology and Sclerology — urinalysis forms part of a thorough, whole-body picture that guides the most personalised and effective care possible.

“Urinalysis is one of my favourite first-visit tools. It’s so simple, yet it has helped me uncover things for clients that had been overlooked for years. The body is always communicating — sometimes we just need to know where to look.”Sue Kira, True Vitality
